If you’ve already learned how to crochet a classic granny square, then I have some very exciting news for you…
You’re officially ready to level up. 🧶✨
Today we’re learning how to make a solid granny square — one of my absolute favorite variations of the traditional granny square. Solid granny squares are beautiful, modern, sturdy, and incredibly versatile. They’re perfect when you want the look of a granny square without the big gaps, making them ideal for blankets, pillows, garments, and home décor.
And don’t worry — even though the word “solid” might sound complicated, this tutorial is still very beginner-friendly. If you can double crochet and chain, you can absolutely make these.
Let’s dive in and create something beautiful together.
What Is a Solid Granny Square?
A solid granny square is exactly what it sounds like — a granny square that has fewer holes and more fabric coverage.
Unlike the classic granny square (with chain spaces between clusters), solid granny squares:
✔ Look more polished
✔ Feel thicker and warmer
✔ Are perfect for blankets and garments
✔ Highlight color beautifully
✔ Work great for modern designs
They’re especially wonderful if you plan to:
-
Make blankets with more warmth
-
Create pillow covers
-
Crochet sweaters or cardigans
-
Design structured projects

-
Solid granny square with a circular center
Today, I’ll walk you through the basic solid granny square, which is the best place to start.
Supplies You’ll Need 🧺
Here’s everything you need to make your solid granny square:
-
Crochet hook – Use a size that matches your yarn (5mm is perfect for worsted weight yarn)
-
Yarn – Any weight yarn works, but worsted weight is ideal for beginners
-
Stitch markers – Optional, but very helpful for marking corners
-
Tapestry needle – For weaving in your ends
If this is your first time making a solid granny square, I highly recommend:
-
Worsted weight yarn
-
5 mm crochet hook
And the best part?
Granny squares don’t require a gauge swatch — so you can skip that step and jump right in.

Solid Granny Square – Step by Step Tutorial
Let’s get started!
🧶 Round 1 – Creating the Center
Begin with either:
-
A magic ring, or
-
Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring
Now:
-
Chain 5 (this counts as 1 double crochet + chain 2)
-
Work 3 double crochet into the ring
-
Chain 2
Repeat this two more times:
-
3 double crochet into the ring
-
Chain 2
For the final group:
-
Work 2 double crochet into the ring
-
Insert your hook into the 3rd chain of the starting chain 5
-
Slip stitch to close the round
✨ You should now have:
-
4 double crochet groups
-
4 corner spaces
Your square is officially born!
🧶 Round 2 – Filling in the Sides
Insert your hook into the corner space where you just finished Round 1 and slip stitch.
Now:
-
Chain 5 (counts as 1 dc + chain 2)
-
Work 2 double crochet into the same corner space
Next:
-
Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches
Now make a corner:
-
(2 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) into the next corner space
Continue around the square:
-
1 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches
-
(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next corner
Repeat this for all sides.
To finish:
-
Double crochet into the first corner space
-
Insert hook into the 3rd chain of the starting chain 5
-
Slip stitch to join
✨ Your square is now thicker, stronger, and beautifully shaped.
🧶 Round 3 – Growing the Square
Insert hook into the same corner space and slip stitch.
Now:
-
Chain 5
-
Work 2 double crochet into the same corner space
Then:
-
Work 1 double crochet into each of the next 7 stitches
At the corner:
-
(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the corner space
Repeat this pattern around:
-
7 double crochet along each side
-
Corner group in each corner
Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of your starting chain to finish.
✨ Congratulations — you’ve made a beautiful solid granny square!
Finishing Your Square
Once you’re happy with the size:
-
Fasten off
-
Thread your tails onto a tapestry needle
-
Weave in all ends securely
This gives your square a clean, professional finish.
