There is something truly magical about black and white crochet.

Simple. Timeless. Bold. Elegant.

This Monochrome Starburst Throw has quickly become one of my favorite blankets I’ve ever made — not only because of how beautiful it turned out, but because of how relaxing, customizable, and beginner-friendly the entire process was.

If you love granny squares, starburst designs, or classic black-and-white color palettes, this blanket is going to steal your heart.

And the best part?
This is a free crochet pattern that you can completely customize — colors, borders, size, joining method — there is no right or wrong here. No matter what you choose, this blanket will come out absolutely beautiful.

Why I Love This Blanket So Much 🖤✨

This project checks every single box for me:

✔ Cozy
✔ Simple
✔ Visually striking
✔ Beginner-friendly
✔ Relaxing
✔ Easy to customize
✔ Perfect for mindless crocheting

Blankets are my number one favorite thing to crochet when I just want to unwind. There’s nothing better than sitting down with yarn, putting on a good show, and watching a blanket slowly grow stitch by stitch.

And this one?
This one is special.

The starburst granny square design creates gorgeous texture and dimension, while the black and white color palette keeps everything clean, modern, and timeless.

It’s the kind of blanket that works in any home décor style — modern, gothic, minimal, cozy, farmhouse — it fits everywhere.

Finished Blanket Size & Layout

For this blanket, I used:

  • 6 squares wide

  • 8 squares long

  • Total of 48 granny squares

This creates a beautiful throw-sized blanket — perfect for:

  • Couch throws

  • Decorative blankets

  • Reading blankets

  • Gifts

  • Bed accents

You can easily adjust the size by adding or removing squares.
Want a baby blanket? Use fewer squares.
Want a bed blanket? Add more rows and columns.

This pattern grows with you.

Supplies You’ll Need 🧺

To create this blanket, here’s what I used:

Yarn

  • Black yarn

  • White yarn

Any weight 4 acrylic yarn works beautifully for this project. Acrylic is durable, washable, and perfect for blankets.

Crochet Hook

  • 5mm crochet hook

A comfortable hook makes a HUGE difference when making dozens of squares.

Fasten off.

(16 total stitches)

Round 2

Attach new yarn in any DC.

Round 4 (Turning the Circle into a Square)

Attach new yarn in any Ch 2 space.

Work the following in the same space to create a corner:

  • Chain 3

  • 2 Treble Crochet

  • Chain 2

  • 3 Treble Crochet

In the next space:

  • 3 Double Crochet

Next space:

  • 3 Half Double Crochet

Next space:

  • 3 Double Crochet

Next space (corner):

  • 3 Treble Crochet

  • Chain 2

  • 3 Treble Crochet

Repeat this pattern around the square until finished.

Slip stitch to join and fasten off.

Single Crochet Border on Each Square

For every completed granny square:

  • Attach yarn in any stitch

  • Single crochet around the entire square

  • Work 3 Single Crochet in each corner

This gives each square a clean, polished edge and prepares it for joining.

Fasten off.

Joining Your Granny Squares

You can use any joining method you love:

  • Single crochet join

  • Slip stitch join

  • Whip stitch

  • Mattress stitch

For this blanket, I personally used the zigzag join stitch.

There are wonderful video tutorials available on YouTube from multiple creators explaining this method — I highly recommend checking them out if you’d like to try it.

The zigzag join adds:

✔ Texture
✔ Strength
✔ Beautiful visual detail

Once all squares are joined, it’s time to finish the blanket.

Blanket Border Instructions

Once your blanket is fully assembled:

Border Round 1

  • Attach yarn in any stitch

  • Single crochet around the entire blanket

  • Work 3 SC in each corner

Slip stitch to join.

Border Round 2

  • Chain 3

  • Double crochet in every stitch around

In each corner:

  • Work 3 DC in the middle stitch of the 3 SC from the previous round

Continue around and slip stitch to join.

You can:

  • Stop here

  • Add more DC rounds

  • Add decorative borders

  • Add color changes

There are endless border options that would compliment this blanket beautifully.
